Offshore Oil field UZ750 contract in Abu Dhabi is the largest single contract in Alcad’s history. Multi-million euro contract covers the supply of over 15,000 maintenance-free cells adapted for demanding conditions in remote locations. Alcad’s Vantex nickel-based battery technology will support critical control and safety functions on artificial islands constructed to boost output of the world’s second largest offshore oilfield. Contract was signed in November 2014 and deliveries will start in Q3 2015.

Oskarshamn, Sweden, September 9, 2015 – Alcad has won the largest single contract in its history to supply the battery backup systems for the ZADCO (Abu Dhabi Zakum Development Company) UZ750 offshore oilfield project in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

This ground breaking project is using land based technology deployed on artificial islands to boost the output of the world’s second largest offshore oil field. In the contract, worth several million Euros, Alcad is delivering battery systems comprising over 15,000 of its  Vantex nickel-based cells, to provide up to 72 hours of backup power for critical control and safety systems and accommodation units on the new facility.

The Upper Zakum Oilfield, located approximately 84 km offshore from Abu Dhabi, has an estimated 50 billion barrels of oil reserves, making it the fourth largest oilfield in the world, and currently produces 500,000 barrels of oil a day (bpd). Upper Zakum is operated by ZADCO, a joint venture comprising of ADNOC (60 percent), ExxonMobil (28 percent) and Japan Oil Development Company (Jodco, 12 percent).

The oilfield’s production capacity is set to increase to 750,000 bpd, sustainable for 25 years, following the completion of the 9 billion Euros UZ750 Project, which is scheduled for 2017. The project involves the construction of four production artificial islands comprising of a central complex housing the processing facilities and the north, south and west satellite platforms. The project also involves the construction of accommodation facilities for 2,150 people, supporting buildings and permanent utilities.

The Alcad battery systems will include 110 V, 220 V and 400 V installations with capacities up to 1,700 Ah to provide from 1 hour up to 72 hours of autonomous backup power for processing equipment, electrical utilities and accommodation on the artificial islands.

Schneider Electric, the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) for the UZ750 Gutor technology backup system, has specified Alcad’s new generation, ultra- low maintenance Vantex batteries to achieve the total reliability and optimized Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) essential for equipment deployed in remote locations. Compared to lead‐acid batteries, the Vantex nickel‐based battery chemistry offers an exceptionally long and predictable service life of up to 20 years, even in the demanding environment experienced in oil and gas operations, with no risk of ‘sudden‐death’ failure. Under normal operation, the Vantex cells are completely maintenance‐free, with no requirement for routine topping‐up with water. The cells are also easy to handle and install while their capability for fast charging further reduces potential downtime.

“We are delighted to be involved in this prestigious ZADCO UZ750 project that provides the largest single contract in Alcad’s history as well as further extending our well established relationship with ADNOC,” says Peter Eriksson, Sales Manager-Alcad. “Winning this contract is further proof that our oil and gas industry customers value the proven capability of our nickel-based batteries to deliver unrivalled performance and reliability in even the most challenging conditions.”

Alcad is scheduled to commence delivery of the first battery systems for the UZ750 project in the third quarter of 2015.
