Alcad Upgrades Backup Batteries for 325 MEW Substations in Kuwait

Alcad, working with the distributor Al-Dhow Engineering, has successfully completed a major project to upgrade the backup batteries at 325 substations operated by Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW).

Ni-Cd batteries will deliver over 20 years of reliable operation in temperatures up to 50°C

Dubai, UAE, 07 April 2025 – Alcad, working with the distributor Al-Dhow Engineering, has successfully completed a major project to upgrade the backup batteries at 325 substations operated by Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW). The nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries play a critical role for MEW by ensuring a continuous supply of 220V/110V power to support all the substation auxiliary loads, such as switchgear, automation and protection circuits for several hours if there is an interruption to the main power supply.

Alcad’s Ni-Cd technology ensures reliable operation over a wide range of temperatures. This enables a design life of over 20 years, even in the demanding operating conditions of Kuwait’s substations where ambient temperatures can reach 50°C.

This latest project continues Alcad’s very long-lasting relationship with MEW. It has been using Alcad batteries for over 35 years, with the company’s Ni-Cd technology currently deployed at over 90 percent of Kuwait’s substations. At some locations, the batteries replaced were Alcad models that had been serving MEW for over 24 years and were still providing reliable operation.

For the project, Al-Dhow provided a complete service for the replacement of time-expired batteries in several main transfer stations as well as retrofitting Alcad’s M and L type Ni-Cd batteries in primary substations. This included the supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the batteries as well as provision of new battery stands, cell connectors, and interconnections.

An Al-Dhow spokesperson said: “The Alcad team demonstrated exceptional professionalism throughout the project, from timely delivery and technical support to comprehensive training. Their attention to detail and commitment to excellence ensured the successful completion of the project and we are confident in the performance and longevity of Alcad batteries.”

The project started in early 2022 and was completed in October 2024.
